History

The origins of Enodis date back to the mid-nineteenth century when under its initial name of S & W Berisford it was founded as a small food merchant based in the north of England. The Company was incorporated in 1910 and re-registered in 1982 as a public limited company. In 1968 it entered the commodity trading business and thereafter through the 1970s it expanded its commodity operations. In 1982 the Company acquired British Sugar plc, owner of the Silver Spoon brand.

In the early 1990’s the Company embarked upon a restructuring programme, commencing with a number of disposals of non-core businesses followed by strategic acquisitions.

In 1994 the Group completed the acquisition of UK retail kitchens and joinery business, Magnet. This was followed by the acquisition of the US commercial food service equipment company, Welbilt Corporation, in 1995. In 1999 the Group significantly expanded its food equipment business by purchasing the Scotsman Group of companies, located principally in the USA.

On 26 June 2000, the Company changed its name to Enodis plc and in 2001 it disposed of Magnet.

The Group became a dedicated Food and Beverage Equipment company.
